Outright performance isn’t brilliant and the dull-sounding engine is a shouter above six-grand, but it’s tolerable. The wide torque spread and short gear ratios mean the 307 can easily tail the VW Golf 2.0, The Peugeot 307’s next surprise is that it does not ride like a Pug should. It’s a bit fidgety at low speeds and lacks the lush absorbency of a 406, or even a 206. The trade-off is improved stability as the limit approaches – better for ham-fisted drivers. But the peugeot still oversteers. That said, the 307 remains a skilled dynamic device. It is consistently good – nicely neutral in balance, with communicative steering, reasonably keen turn-in, and strong hold. Pretty good brake feel and responsive, too. But the Pug feels a tad one-dimensional because it lacks the obvious passive rear-steer effect of the 306,and its Citroën Xsara cousin. Some minor plastic details would receive a big cross from the quality bods at VW, but generally the 307 is quite upmarket.Peugeot has aimed for quality instead of wacky design .Despite our reservations about the 307’s curious cab-forward packaging, rear space beats the VW. The bench itself offers impressive comfort and even with the optional sunroof, headroom is ample. Likewise boot space, which is almost the Golf’s equal with the seat raised and truly wagon-like with everything dropped. The Pug’s front seats are the best of the bunch, but the driving position is slightly awkward for some and fine for others. The 307’s pedals are positioned quite high and a bit to the left, but it’s still nothing like the 206’s cramped lucky dip. The digital climate controls are a cinch to operate the stereo is good, and vision is expansive. There’s an outstanding features list for six airbags, ABS, climate control, full power windows, six-speaker CD, five lap-sash belts with matching headrests, individual armrests on height-adjustable front seats, luggage net, and two take-away hooks Look for Second Hand Renault Megane for sale
